Ricky Martin Won't Marry Partner Till Puerto Rico Recognizes Gay Marriages

Ricky Martin has spoken out in a recent interview about his hopes to marry his long-term partner in the future, but says he won’t do so until the laws on same sex unions change in his home of Puerto Rico.

The Latin pop star came out as gay earlier this year, revealing on the Oprah Winfrey Show that he’s in a long-term relationship, but refused to reveal the man’s identity. The announcement put an end to years of rumours surrounding the 38-year-old singer’s sexuality.

In 2008 Ricky Martin became a father to twin boys, born through a surrogate mother, further fuelling the rumours about his sexual orientation.

Now the Livin La Vida Loca star has revealed his true feelings over gay marriage, and his plans to cement his partnership with his partner. The singer conceded he could get married in another country where same sex unions are legal such as Spain or Argentina, adding “But why do we have to go somewhere else?”

At present, Ricky’s home of Puerto Rico does not recognise same sex partnerships legally, and until they do, the father of two says he won’t tie the knot as he’s determined to be married in the place he calls his home. The pop singer said that Puerto Rico’s refusal to accept gay couples’ rights makes him feel like “a second class citizen” adding “I pay my taxes. Why Can’t I have that right?”
