The young gay men in Australia are increasingly getting indulged into unsafe sexual practices than older men who have sex with men (MSM), as found by a recent study.
The findings of the study conducted by researchers from Melbourne’s Burnet Institute appeared in the Medical Journal of Australia. The researchers discovered that young gay men in Australia were less inclined towards getting themselves tested for HIV; condom use was less among them; they were less likely to get acquainted with the HIV status of their partners.
The growing trend could be considered contributed by factors such as increasing rates of unprotected anal sex and infections, including syphilis and gonorrhea that raises probability of bodily fluids blending together.
In Victoria, between 2000 and 2009, 1635 men who had sex with men were detected with HIV positive and the median age of all the men were 35.9 years that declined from 38.8 years in 2007, as told by Carol El-Hayek, Epidemiologist at the Centre for Population Health at the Burnet Institute in Melbourne. She added that there was a rise of 62% cases of HIV among gay men aged 25 to 29 years old in 2009.
